Personalized, Differentiation, and Student-Centered; Different Or Same?

Schools today are adapting modern teaching approaches that acknowledge students as unique individuals, each with a different method of understanding and learning. It has become significant to introduce teaching systems that address the differing needs of diverse students.

Personalized and Student-Centered Learning

Personalized and Student-Centered approaches are mostly the same concept since both of these attempts follow the teaching method that effectively reaches the minds of students.

As per The Glossary Of Education Reform, these two learning systems refer to: “A diverse variety of educational programs, learning experiences, instructional approaches, and academic support strategies that are intended to address the distinct learning needs, interests, aspirations, or cultural backgrounds of individual students.”

Both of these recognize students as capable distinctive minds rather than lecturing them all as one.

Personalized and Student-Centered Learning is focused on identifying the academic requirements of each student and devising a strategy that caters to their individualistic needs, helps them progress in school, enhance their performance and bring them closer to their dreams and objectives. It concentrates more on the students instead of conventional curriculum-based teaching.

These two learning systems are built on the principle of student enhancement, thus, emphasizing understanding, learning, and increasing student’s knowledge in a manner that is understandable to the student and helps them in future endeavors.

Personalized and Student-Based Learning entails reforming and restructuring how the current educational system works at its core and allows teachers and instructors to familiarize themselves with the students and build strong interpersonal relationships.

Differentiation

Differentiation means using a range of teaching methods and course modifications to adapt to teaching a varied range of students with differing learning requirements within the same lesson.

It refers to grouping together several students with diverse needs and academic progression.

Employing ‘Differentiation’ as a teaching approach requires adjustable instructional strategies that can capture the attention of all types of students and attend to their unique and specific learning needs.

The goal behind ‘Differentiation’ is to equip all students with the skills and tools necessary to fulfill their goals and objectives with the help of a teaching strategy that can be adjusted to cater to student diversity.

While Differentiation, Personalized, and Student Based Learning may have different aspects and instructional methods, all of them aim to achieve the same objective; enhance student understanding and knowledge effectively and productively.
